Whether the first train works for an early flight does not depend on departure time alone. Your airline’s required terminal arrival time, boarding station, luggage and current disruptions all matter. Under the current FEX timetable, a train leaves Berlin Hauptbahnhof at 3:07 am and reaches BER at 3:29 am. An airport hotel is therefore not automatically necessary for every departure before 7:30 am, but it does remove timetable and delay risk.

The currently published timetable includes several direct FEX services from Hauptbahnhof to the station beneath Terminal 1 before the dense daytime service begins:

The timetable is valid from 2 October to 12 December 2026. The airport describes the FEX as a 24-hour connection and states that it runs every 15 minutes from about 4 am to 1 am. It lists both the S9 and S85 at 20-minute intervals, but the useful early service depends on your boarding station, day of travel and engineering works. The station is directly beneath Terminal 1 on level U2. Check the live DB or VBB journey planner the evening before and again before setting off.
There is no universal airport arrival time: follow your airline’s requirements for check-in, bag drop and boarding. If your party must be at the terminal by 3:30 am, for example, the FEX arriving at 3:29 am provides no useful margin. If arrival by 4:00 am is acceptable, the 3:07 am service gives about 31 minutes of buffer, while the train arriving at exactly 4:00 am would again be too tight.
Start with the airline’s binding deadline, then choose a service that also leaves room for the walk from the platform, possible delays and bag drop where applicable. From outside Berlin, or with several changes, a taxi, your own car or an airport hotel may be more reliable.
Two hotels stand directly at Terminal 1: the Steigenberger Airport Hotel Berlin is only about 50 metres away, with a covered walkway straight into the terminal. The IntercityHotel Berlin Airport BER Terminal 1+2 is roughly a two-to-five-minute walk. According to their official guest guides, both front desks are staffed around the clock.
A little further out are the Holiday Inn Berlin Airport Conference Centre and the IntercityHotel Berlin Airport Area North (about 3 km and 4 km from Terminal 1 respectively). From there, you need a verified train, shuttle or taxi connection in the morning. For the most predictable night, the two hotels directly at the terminal are simpler.
According to its guest guide, Steigenberger serves breakfast from 5:30 to 10:30 am Monday to Friday and from 5:30 to 11:00 am on weekends and public holidays. IntercityHotel BER Terminal 1+2 serves breakfast daily from 6:00 to 10:00 am. Both hotels offer a packed lunch when ordered at reception by 9:00 pm the previous evening. Ask about price and contents when ordering. To shorten the morning further, some airlines take your checked bag the evening before; the time windows are in Evening bag drop at BER.
An airport hotel is especially useful if the terminal time required by your airline is earlier than your first practical connection, if you are travelling from outside Berlin, would need several changes, or want extra margin with children, substantial luggage or limited mobility. The train is a good option when a service checked for your travel date gets you to the terminal with sufficient buffer. A fixed departure threshold such as 7:30 or 8:00 am would be too broad.
Yes, several airlines offer evening check-in with baggage drop-off at Terminal 1. Lufthansa (including Swiss, Austrian and Brussels) takes bags in the evening from about 5:00 to 7:30 pm, Eurowings from about 6:00 to 8:00 pm (Saturdays 2:00 to 4:00 pm) and easyJet from about 6:00 to 9:00 pm for flights the next morning. That lets you walk from your airport hotel to the terminal with hand luggage only. Exact times and conditions are set by each airline, so check with yours in advance.
The self-service baggage counters in Terminal 1 open daily at 3:30 am (until 10 pm), so you cannot drop checked bags before then. When your airline's regular check-in opens depends on the carrier, usually around 2 to 2.5 hours before departure. For a very early flight that means arriving before 3:30 am gains you nothing for checked luggage. With hand luggage only and online check-in you are more flexible on timing.
A taxi between central Berlin and BER costs from € 60 and takes around 40 min; Berlin's tariff has no separate night surcharge. When no train runs during the night, a pre-booked taxi can be the more reliable alternative to an airport hotel. At BER, use only the official taxi rank in front of the terminal and check that the meter is running.
